Jensen Recaps Stellar 2017 Signing Class

SHAWNEE – Oklahoma Baptist added 38 players to its football roster Wednesday on National Signing Day.
 
"We're so happy with the signing class we had today," said OBU Head Coach Chris Jensen. "I feel like this is one of the top recruiting classes we've brought in. We changed our approach three years ago. I think our tactic is to present what we have at this university and the growth that is going to take place over the next four or five years at our university. So what we end up with are guys who really want to be here."
 
Jensen said his staff focused on the offensive line and the secondary group on defense.
 
OBU signed eight offensive linemen, averaging 6-2, 278 pounds, including 6-6, 320-pound Zane Gilbreath from Mansfield, Texas.
 
"With our redshirt class and the guys we already have on campus I feel really good," Jensen said. "We knew we had to get better up front. Not just better but deeper. The sheer number of guys we signed up front reflects our commitment to get better. We didn't want to just get guys with eye-popping size for signing day. We got some guys that can mesh with our offense."
 
The Bison landed nine new defensive linemen that on average stand 6-2 and weigh in at 257 pounds.
 
Also on defense, the Bison picked up seven defensive backs and four linebackers.
 
"We have some guys who are going to push for time as true freshmen in the secondary," said Jensen.
 
Offensively, OBU signed two quarterbacks, four receivers, a running back and a tight end.
 
Connor Watts from Carl Albert was signed as a kicker.
 
The recruiting class includes 23 players from Oklahoma, 12 from Texas and one each from Nevada, Alaska and British Columbia.
