FORT SMITH, Ark. – Oklahoma Baptist sophomore
Morgan Simmons turned in one of the best performances by a Bison golfer at a Great American Conference Championship with the 2025 edition concluding on Wednesday at Hardscrabble Country Club.
The Memphis, Tenn., native accomplished this by the end of the three-day tournament:
- A spot on the All-Tournament Team. Simmons is one of only two OBU players (Hayden Meiser, 2023) to earn this distinction.
- Her three-round total of 218 is the best by a Bison ever and tied for eighth in GAC Championship history.
- Lastly, she finished in third overall, tying the placement Meiser had in 2023.
Her first round saw an even-par (35) through the first nine holes before finishing two over on the back nine. Heading into the second round, Simmons was in second place overall.
During Tuesday's round, Simmons posted four birdies. However, she added six bogeys but did remain within two shots of the lead. And then on Wednesday, the sophomore had a little rough patch, shooting four-over (39) through the first nine holes which included a double-bogey on the ninth. Despite that, Simmons finished strong. Down the stretch, she earned two birdies and seven pars.
By the end of the round, Simmons missed competing in a playoff with SWOSU's Freya Sala and Henderson's Felisa Sajulga by just one stroke.
For the rest of the Bison, though, things didn't go as smoothly.
OBU's next top finishers in a tie for 38th place were
Gimena Errecart and
Marta Romero Crespo. That duo's first rounds were the real trouble spots, finishing +19 and +21, respectively.
Josefina Serres Scheffer and
Rylie Spaulding rounded out OBU's efforts. Scheffer finished in 41st while Spaulding followed one spot later. As a team, the Bison finished in ninth out of 10 schools.
OBU will wait and see if it gains entry into the May 5-7 NCAA Central Region Championship. That takes place in Edmond at Kickingbird Golf Club.
