RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – Oklahoma Baptist softball players
Jaycee Shaffer and
Greenlee Wells were selected as Great American Conference Pitcher and Player of the Week on Tuesday.
For both student-athletes, it's their first career honors.
Last week, those two helped the Bison sweep Arkansas-Monticello and improve the team's record to 8-7 and 3-0 in the conference.
In the circle, Shaffer, a junior from Cyril, Okla., posted a 2-0 record against the Cotton Blossoms. Over 12.0 innings pitched, she allowed just one run, fanned 18 and issued four walks. Shaffer also limited UAM batters to a .222 batting average. During the 5-0, game-one victory, Shaffer matched her career-high with 12 strikeouts.
This season, Shaffer ranks third in the GAC with 37 strikeouts, is top-three in wins (5) and third in ERA (1.30).
As for Wells, the Vian, Okla., native was electric in the batter's box. She hit .556, with a double, three homers and nine RBI. Wells also registered a 1.667 slugging mark and .600 on-base percentage. Also of note, she hit home runs in each game against UAM, becoming just the sixth Bison in the D2 era to record bombs in three consecutive contests.
Through 15 games this spring, Wells ranks second in the GAC with five homers and 19 RBI as well as fifth with 34 total bases and sixth in slugging (.773).
Next on the schedule for OBU is a GAC series with Southwestern Oklahoma State starting on Feb. 28 in Shawnee.
