SHAWNEE – Two rivals, Oklahoma Baptist and Southwestern Oklahoma State, square off in the Great American Conference opener on Wednesday at the OBU Soccer Complex. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
This series has gone back and forth. SWOSU leads 11-8-4 overall but most recently, the Bison won in double-overtime during last year's GAC Tournament semifinal match in Shawnee. In terms of competition on Bison Hill, the matchup has featured five OBU wins, five SWOSU victories and a tie dating back to 2015.
Coming into Wednesday's contest, the Bison are 1-3-1 and are coming off a great battle with No. 4 Central Missouri on Sept. 21. As for SWOSU, it possesses a 2-3-1 overall mark and is coming off a 1-0 win against Pittsburg State last weekend.
As we head into the matchup, here are notes on both teams, first with OBU.
- Freshman keeper Claire Stoemer notched her first career clean sheet against UCM.
- Stoermer has the second-best save percentage (.788) in the GAC and averages the third-most saves (5.2).
- Three different Bison are slotted top-10 in the GAC with one goal scored: Alanna Bloomingdale, Emma Teague and Olivia Kenas.
- Plus, Krissy Fulton and Ashley Bell are ranked top-10 with one assist apiece.
- Last season, OBU won two of three matches against SWOSU. All three matches were 1-0 decisions.
- The Bison rank third in the GAC in shots per game (11.4). They also are slotted third in shots on goal (5.4).
SWOSU Notes
- The Bulldogs have allowed at least one goal in five of six matches this fall.
- Julie Andersen is tied for the GAC lead with two goals. Both of those were game-winners, too, against Oklahoma Christian and Pittsburg State.
- Three others have scored for Southwestern this fall: Philippine de Sancy, Madelyn Kitchen and Ruth Vasquez.
- SWOSU has only assisted on one goal this season. That came from Elise LaForge versus Missouri Southern State on Sept. 14.
- As a team, the Bulldogs rank sixth out of seven GAC schools in shots per contest (10.17).
