MAGNOLIA, Ark. – Matthew Higdon smashed his school record while setting a new meet and facility record in the hammer to highlight OBU's efforts on day one of the 2024 Great American Conference Outdoor Championships.
Higdon's winning throw reached 63.54m (208-6), over 4.50 meters in front of the nearest competitor. The feat broke his program record of 60.57m (198-9) while eclipsing the GAC's (Higdon; 59.10m) and facility's (Saleem Fadel; 57.59m) all-time marks.
He collected first-team All-GAC honors for the heave.
Alexander Schovanec (45.13m; 148-1), Elijah Wood (45.00m; 147-8), and Matthew Werschem (44.94m; 147-5) claimed fourth through sixth in the event, respectively.
Caden Martin is second in the decathlon with 2,997 points, led by a win in the shot put (11.13m). He also collected top-five finishes in the 100m (4th; 11.87) and 400m (5th; 53.69).
Sloan Lewis has compiled 2,553 points in the multi-event thus far. His inaugural day was highlighted by a sixth-place mark in the high jump (1.70m).
James Williams crossed 10th (33:54.11) in the 10,000-meter race, while Emery Crayton placed fifth in the 3000m steeplechase (9:33.43). Also competing in the latter was Ethan Banks, who finished 11th (10:19.49).
