Game Notes
OPENING KICKOFF
- OBU suffered a 62-14 loss in Durant last weekend after Southeastern Oklahoma State racked up over 500 yards of offense. The Bison fell into a deep hole in the first half and failed to climb out of it in the loss. It was the first loss to the Savage Storm since 2017.
LAST TIME VERSUS SOUTHERN ARKANSAS
- Behind 500 yards of offense, Oklahoma Baptist claimed its first victory over Southern Arkansas in program history a season ago. After facing a seven-point deficit in the inaugural quarter, the Bison erupted for 14 in the second to trail 24-20 going into the half. The Muleriders tacked on 10 in the third before OBU got hot again, scoring 20 in the final quarter. Tailback Tyler Stuever scored on a one-yard rush to draw the tally 34-31 at the 11:08 mark in the fourth. Then quarterback Preston Haire reached paydirt from eight yards to draw within three, 37-40. Finally, following a Jay Jordan interception, Haire found Cornell for a nine-yard touchdown with 4:07 left to lift the Bison over Southern Arkansas.
- Preston Haire threw for 273 yards and two touchdowns to go along with a score on the ground. Haire led the Oklahoma Baptist rushing attack with 114 yards, averaging 8.1 yards per carry, and a score. Tailback Tyler Stuever accounted for 111 of OBU's 227 rushing yards, adding three scores to cement a career day. Josh Cornell reeled in 10 passes for 148 yards and a score, while Keilahn Harris tallied seven receptions and a touchdown. Furthermore, Braden Phipps charted his second-best total of the 2021 season, racking up 40 yards on four catches.
- Josh Arnold paced the defensive charge with nine tackles, including seven unassisted, and a tackle-for-loss. Nick Boone led the team with 2.0 TFLs and a sack, while Tyler King contributed five solo stops.
CAREER FIRST
- Sophomore signal caller, Seth Streeter, will make the first start of his career this Saturday. Streeter shined late against Southeastern last weekend, charting 123 yards on 11 completions and a touchdown.
- The Tulsa, Okla., native led two scoring drives of 89 and 56 yards to post OBU's only points. The first began at the 14:14 mark in the fourth quarter with a 23-yard strike to Matthew Norman. Streeter went on to tally three carries for 18 yards and four completions for 36 yards to set up an EJ Moore touchdown from the Southeastern four-yard line. He connected with five different receivers on the drive.
- Streeter's second scoring drive began on the Bison 44-yard line. He completed three consecutive passes of four, 16, and 28 yards before capping the possession with an eight-yard fade to Charles Whitebear. The drive lasted just 1:25, as he charted 56 yards through the air.
FINDING A RHYTHM
- It's been no secret how injuries have affected the Oklahoma Baptist roster this season. Specifically on the offensive line, where five of the eight contests have seen a different set of starters. Saturday will mark the third consecutive game with the same quintet up front.
- The void of left-side veterans, Kaleb Butler and Zach Frazier, has been filled by young guns Chad Anderson and Andrew Sawyer. Center Jackson Landsteiner has seen action in all but two games, while Jordan Allen (Right Guard) and Jake Sitsler (Right Tackle) have started all season. The fivesome looks to have found their rhythm with an uphill trend in total offensive yardage the previous three weeks. The figures are as follows: ATU (276), ECU (315), and SEOSU (322).
RECORD BREAKER
- Junior receiver Keilahn Harris is on the brink of breaking multiple program records. Last week, he tied the all-time OBU receptions record (176), held by Josh Cornell ('18-'21), and needs 37 yards to eclipse the Bison mark for receiving yards (2,322) that Cornell also has. Harris is three scores away from the receiving touchdowns record (28), which would give him ownership of all but one receiving program record.
- In almost three seasons on Bison hill, Harris has 26 touchdowns, including a kickoff return in 2021. The figure is third all-time in OBU history, nine off Tyler Stuever's ('18-'21) leading total of 35.
IN RARIFIED AIR
- Chase Whitebear's third-quarter interception at Southeastern last week was his third of the year. He is now one of only two Bison freshmen to attain that total in a single season. In 2013, D'Ante Meeking ended up with four. Whitebear, a lengthy 6-foot-3 corner, also has four pass breakups, putting him in a tie for third in the Great American Conference with seven total PBUs and INTs. Furthermore, Whitebear is just one pick away from tying the school's single-season interception mark. Meeking had four each in 2013 and 2015, while Eugene Estes snagged four in the 2013 campaign.
STACKIN 'EM UP
- Elijah Tomlin is the Bison's leading tackler with 63 stops, a mark that ranks seventh in the GAC. Included in that mix is the fifth-best assisted tackles total. To date, the junior has racked up 37 assisted stops with a season-high nine against Arkansas Tech on Oct. 9. Overall, Tomlin has recorded at least three assisted tackles in six of eight games this fall. Behind Tomlin is Kaleb Peters with 60 tackles, to go along with a team-best two forced fumbles. Peters has five or more tackles in every contest this season, highlighted by an 11-tackle performance in week five against Southwestern Oklahoma State.
SCOUTING THE MULERIDERS
- Southern Arkansas makes the trip across state lines with a 3-5 (3-5 GAC) record, good for a fourth-place tie in the Great American Conference. The Mulderiders are coming off a 63-31 loss to the No. 3 in the country, Ouachita Baptist. What started as a neck-and-neck 21-14 battle after the first quarter, quickly turned into a lopsided triumph for the Tigers, who added 42 points on top of eight rushing touchdowns.
- First-year head coach Brad Smiley has the SAU offense hitting on all cylinders, ranking as the second-best offense in the conference. Southern Arkansas averages 462.5 yards per game, a figure that ranks 13th in the country. Most of its production comes from a rushing attack that averages 239.9 yards per contest. Furthermore, SAU is No. 3 in the league and No. 11 in Division II for first down conversions (191).
- On special teams, Southern Arkansas has struggled. They rank last in the GAC in blocked punts allowed (2) and net punting (31.04 yds/gm). Additionally, the Muleriders average just 15.55 yards per kickoff return, which is 10th in the conference.
- Junior quarterback OB Jones leads the passing attack with 1,385 yards, 13 touchdowns, and five interceptions. He adds 634 yards and four scores on the ground, which is second on the team. Running back Jariq Scales, named conference freshman of the year a season ago, totals a team-best 697 yards and nine touchdowns. Scales also has 22 receptions for 215 yards and two scores. Receiver Dekendrick Bender has been the favorite target, totaling 23 catches for 337 yards and three scores, while Kamden Perry totals 268 yards.
- Defensively, Jacob Berry is tied for the top spot in the conference for tackles, racking up 71 to go along with 2.0 TFLs and a sack. Cornerback Del Kristoffer Wade ranks second on the squad with 44 tackles and has a team-leading four PBUs. Wade adds one of SAU's three interceptions this season. Prince Udenze heads the defensive line unit with 6.5 TFLs, which is tied for fifth in the league.
