Bison Soccer: Week 9 Preview

SHAWNEE – Oklahoma Baptist is nearing another Great American Conference regular-season title heading into its Oct. 28 road match at Southern Nazarene.

To date, the Bison have won six in a row, own a 9-4-1 overall mark and first-place record (8-1) in the GAC. They are coming off an impressive 2-0 road win against Ouachita in which Annie Louthan and Hannah Evans scored goals while keeper Ireland Jeffrey recorded her sixth shutout of the season.

OBU's efforts last week netted Jeffrey and midfielder Kelsi Mensen GAC Player of the Week honors.

As has been the case in recent years, coach Mike White's team is at the top of the conference in numerous categories. The Bison rank first in shots (21.89), assists (23), points (69), goals allowed (3), goals against average (0.33) and shutouts (6). Additionally, the team's overall assist count of 29 ranks tied for 16th in the country and its 87 points are tied for 36th.

Individually, the Bison have relied on numerous players to attain those totals.

Senior forward Tori Kitchel is tied for 19th in DII with four game-winning goals. That mark is tied for the GAC lead, as well. Fellow classmate Hannah White is tied for fourth in the conference with 14 points while Hannah Evans's five assists are tied for most in the GAC.

Louthan and Jeffrey, both newcomers this season, stack up well in the GAC, too. Louthan, a midfielder, is ninth averaging 0.93 points per game. For Jeffrey, she's 25th in the nation and one of only three freshmen in the country with a GAA of 0.58 or better. That total also represents the best mark in the conference. Additionally, Ireland's .850 save percentage is second in the GAC.

Here's a look at the Crimson Storm:

Southern Nazarene | Great American Conference | Spring 2021 Record: 2-5-1

The fall campaign for SNU has been a tough one. The Storm have lost eight in a row and currently own a 1-13 record. They are also 0-8 in GAC play. SNU has given up at least three goals in the current eight-game drought, including seven to Oklahoma Baptist during the Oct. 5 contest in Shawnee.

As one might expect, SNU ranks at the bottom of the GAC in every major statistical category.

The Storm do have a few players to keep an eye on:

No. 1 Eliya Alvidrez | Ranks second in the GAC in saves per game (6.45)
No. 5 Kaitlyn Deaton | Has a team-high six assists to go along with two goals
No. 22 Alejandre Andrade | Spring All-GAC Honorable Mention; Ranks in the top-six in the GAC shots (5.0), goals (6) and points (13)
