EDMOND, Okla. – It has been 197 long days since the last time Oklahoma Baptist had any sort of athletics competition.
Boy, did it feel good to be back.
The result didn't matter. A score was not even kept.
All that mattered was fast swimming, and that's what was on tap on Saturday afternoon at the Mitch Park YMCA as the Bison men's and women's swimming teams competed against Oklahoma Christian University and Tabor College.
"We had a great meet today," said Head Coach
Matt Hood. "It was an awesome opportunity to get out early in the season to see where we are, and what we need to work on moving forward."
The Bison won 12 events as the women's team was outstanding all day in the pool, winning eight of their 10 events.
In the speed events,
Megan Gallagher won the 50 free with a time of 24.61, while
Jamie Edwards finished second (24.63), and
Camila Alduenda was third (24.80). Gallagher would double up with a win in the 100 free at 54.73 followed by
Anna Tindall (55.55) and Edwards (55.84).
Gallagher followed also posted a win in the 100 back at 1:01.77, while
Kaelyn Lance was second with a time of 1:02.50. Tindall won the 100 breast at 1:10.89, with
Emma Jorgensen third at 1:12.30.
Edwards won the 100 fly at 1:01.14, followed by
Brooke Newby (1:02.61) and
Laura Cifuentes (1:02.78), while Jorgensen took home the win in the 200 IM at 2:14.27, followed by Tindall in second at 2:14.28.
The OBU women took both relay events, as the 200 yard free relay team of Tindall, Cifuentes, Gallgher, and Edwards had a time with 1:40.21, while the 200 medley relay team of Alduenda, Tindall, Cifuentes, and Gallagher were victorious at 1:50.74.
On the men's side, Alex Yanchunas won the 500 free with a time of 4:56.86 in the distance event.
William Newman won the 100 back with a time of 51.80.
Newman followed that up with a win in the 100 fly at 51.50, while
Tristan Villa was second with a time of 53.11.
Nathan Chan took home a second place finish in the 200 IM with a time of 2:01.49.
The 200 yard free relay team of Newman,
Caleb Gregory,
David Garcia, and
Colton Wyatt placed second with a time of 1:26.97.
"I am really excited about where we will be able to go this season building on everything we learned today," said Hood.
OBU is scheduled to return to the pool on Nov. 13 at the Eagle Invite in Edmond.
