SHAWNEE – After spending two years at Cowley Community College, few could have predicted the kind of impact
Bruno Suiama would end up having in his first season on Bison Hill. On Tuesday, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced that Suiama had earned All-America honors.
The junior from Sao Paulo, Brazil, kicked off his OBU career by winning the A Draw of the Tiger-Jinx Tournament to open the fall season, following that with an appearance in the championship match at the Midwestern State Tournament before falling to MSU's Angel Palacios.
The All-American saw his season cut short due to a knee injury five matches in. In matches he finished, Suiama went 2-2 at No. 1 singles – his two losses coming to Division I opponents – including getting revenge on Palacios at No. 1 singles 2-6, 6-3, 6-3, helping OBU to a 4-3 win over No. 15 Midwestern State on Feb. 14.
"It comes as no surprise to us that Bruno has earned the honor of All-American," said OBU head coach
Jason Proctor. "As proud as we are of his performance, we are more proud of how he's challenged himself to improve over the course of this year."
Suiama was awarded an extra year of eligibility because of his season's premature end, so Bison fans will get a full taste of the All-American next spring.
