OKLAHOMA CITY – The atmosphere was electric at the Oklahoma City Tennis Center as the Ichabods of Washburn edge the Bison 5-4 for in Oklahoma Baptist's season opener.
Â
The Center was filled with shouts of "Go 'Bods!" from the Washburn fans and players and "Go Green Go Gold!" from the OBU fans and players. Individuals from each team met in several tournaments in the back half of 2017, so each side was familiar with the other. This familiarity would not disappoint in the name of competition.
Â
Doubles kicked off the afternoon, with OBU's No. 1 doubles team,
Kevin Andrusch and
Luis Romero, took on Washburn's Alejandro Valarezo Plaza and Blake Hunter. Last year at the ITA Central Regional Championships, Washburn's Plaza/Hunter won the doubles title, defeating OBU's
Daniel Aguilera/Lucas Branco along the way by a score of 8-1. Similar success was to be had this time around for the Washburn duo as they defeated Andrusch/Romero 8-2
Â
OBU's other two doubles teams saw victory.
Matias Le Fort and
Gianluca Galdi defeated Paul Haase and Chase Brill 8-4, as well as
Lucas Castelo Branco and
Daniel Aguilera taking down Raul Dicu and Bradley Eidenmueller 8-2.
Â
In the singles flight, OBU's No. 2 Castelo Branco and No. 5 Galdi found themselves in the winner's circle with scores of 7-6 (7-4) 6-1 and 7-5, 6-1 against Washburn's Hunter and Brill, respectively.
Â
The Bison return to action next weekend, taking on Drury and Lindenwood in Springfield, Missouri.
