Swimming Competes at World Championships

BUDAPEST, Hungary – Five Oklahoma Baptist swimmers competed at the FINA World Championships this summer, representing five different countries.
 
Four OBU alumni and freshman Celina Marquez went head-to-head against the top swimmers in the world from 180 countries at the global event.
 
Marquez competed for El Salvador in the 50 and 200-meter backstroke. She placed 30th in the 200-meter backstroke with a time of 2:22.73. Marquez was 45th overall in the 50-meter backstroke after finishing in 30.38.
 
Former Lady Bison Ines Remersaro represented Uruguay in the 50-meter freestyle. She set a new Uruguayan record in the event at 26.59, winning her heat and placing 43rd overall. Remersaro also had a 43rd place finish in the 100-meter freestyle in 58.27.
 
Daniel Ramirez, a Bison alum, swam for Mexico in three events. He lined up as the third leg in the mixed 4x100-meter medley relay that finished 11th in 3:54.74, setting a new Mexican record in the process. Ramirez also finished 57th in the 50-meter freestyle (23.19), and was 55th in the 100-meter freestyle (50.54).
 
Bison alum AJ Barbar had a 50th place finish for Lebanon in the 50-meter butterfly, finishing in 25.17. He also competed in the 50-meter freestyle with a time of 23.76.
 
Greg Penny, a former Bison, represented the Virgin Islands at the meet. Penny finished 55th overall in the 50-meter breaststroke (29.96), and finished the 100-meter breaststroke in 1:05.16.
 
OBU will open the 2017-18 season by hosting the Shawnee Invitational on Sept. 22 at the Shawnee Splash Water Park.
