Lady Bison Claim First National Crown

MOBILE, Ala. – Oklahoma Baptist claimed its first national tennis championship Friday with a 5-1 win over Indiana Wesleyan, completing the program's best season.
 
Rouxanne Janse van Renbsurg earned Tournament Outstanding Player honors and Peter McCorkle, in his final match as coach, won Coach of the Year. McCorkle will take a position at Oral Roberts University in the fall.
 
"We saw the same thing from the girls we've seen all season- a lot of determination and a lot of heart," said McCorkle. "Indiana Wesleyan is just as good as they were last year when they beat us in the finals. Our girls just stepped up. We talked a lot about last year. That was a disappointing loss. We were ready to play."

 The Lady Bison led 2-1 after doubles.
 
Olivia Charvat and Madeleine Boepple cruised to an 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles and Rouxanne Janse van Rensburg and Kim Moosbacher won at No. 1 doubles, 8-3.
 
Janse van Rensburg won at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-4. Charvat then put the Lady Bison on the brink of a title with a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 2. Boepple won at No 4 singles, 6-3, 6-1, clinching the championship for the Lady Bison.
 
Going out as national champions are seniors Charvat, Alex Morales and Kathryn Sild, as well as McCorkle, who leaves as the all-time leader in women's tennis wins at OBU.
 
"I'm proud of our teams today and I'm also proud, as an alum, that's I'm leaving these teams with them in a good place," McCorkle said. "These last five years have meant a lot to me and I'm proud to leave knowing that they have a really bright future. They are and are going to be contenders in Division II."
 
The Lady Bison finish with a 27-3 mark, the best record in the history of the program.
