SHAWNEE – Oklahoma Baptist travels to Southwestern Oklahoma State and Weatherford for the Bison's first Thursday night football game since the program restarted in 2013.
Â
OBU comes in at 2-5 and the Bulldogs, after starting 0-4, are on a three-game win streak.
Â
Southwestern scored a 42-14 win over the Bison last year in Shawnee. OBU had more total offense but the Bulldogs had a pick-6 and dominated special teams with a punt blocked for touchdown, a 69-yard TD punt return and average returns of 39 yards on punts (3) and 47.5 yards on kickoffs (2).
Â
The Bison remain No. 1 in the National Christian College Athletic Association power ratings, thanks to their strength of schedule among NCCAA schools.
Â
OBU's offense is led by a battling offensive line and highlight reel athletes such as
Isaiah Mallory. Mallory, after a week at second in the Great American Conference rushing standings, rolled off 182 yards against Northwestern and moved back into the conference lead.
Â
Dezmond Stegall passed for 169 yards and three touchdowns last week and scored once on the ground while amassing 64 rushing yards. It was his fourth multi-touchdown game of the season. He also had three touchdown passes at Monticello, two touchdown passes and a rushing touchdown at East Central and two passing touchdowns against Southeastern Oklahoma State.
Â
Fifteen Bison have caught passes this season and five have reeled in scoring passes from Stegall this season.
Josh Pettijohn leads the Bison with 27 catches and four touchdowns but
Stephan Turner and
Frankie Edwards became the second and third multi-touchdown receivers last week. Each has two scoring passes.
Â
The Bison have scored in all 40 games of the
Chris Jensen coaching era. Jensen has guided the program through its rebirth and its current transition into NCAA Division II. The last shutout of the Bison was a 0-0 tie against Central State Oklahoma in 1940.
Â
The Bison defense has battled the injury bug all season long but has had some bright spots. Four quarterbacks in the GAC average 240 yards or more passing and OBU faces the fourth of those in a row this week in Southwestern's Marc Evans (243.7).
Â
Bison safety
D'Ante Meeking has intercepted a pass in back-to-back games to tie Charles Taylor for the team lead at 2. Meeking leads OBU with six passes broken up this season.
Â
OBU defensive lineman
Dennis Nguyen is second in the GAC with eight tackles for loss this season.
Â
Bison linebackers
Levi Jennings (9.1) and
Brynden Pitzer (8.6) are sixth and eighth, respectively, in the Great American Conference tackles column this season. With the schedule change to Thursday night, usual broadcast partners KGFF in Shawnee and El Patron in Oklahoma City are unable to carry the game.
Â
The Bison Radio Network continues as usual on Chrome 93.5 in Tulsa and picks up for this week, AM 1340 The Game in Oklahoma City. The game also is available, as usual, online at OBUBisonLive.com and on the iHeart radio smart phone app.
Â
Pregame Thursday begins at 5:30 with the Todd Miller working the game as the play-by-play announcer with color commentary from John Parrish.
