SHAWNEE – The Oklahoma Baptist women's track and field team captured its fourth consecutive Great American Conference Outdoor Championship on Friday at Hurt Memorial Athletic Complex.
Graduate student
Valerie Olson took home Most Valuable Player in the process.
Among the numerous highlights,
Asia Foster won the 200-meter dash in 23.63, a GAC meet record, an NCAA Provisional mark as well as a personal-record. She also broke the previous GAC Championship record in the 400 when she crossed the finish line in 53.74. That also met NCAA qualifying standards.
There were four other first-place wins for the Bison.
Jamora Horace met NCAA standards in the high jump reaching 1.72m (5-7.75) while
Sophia Strange won the 5,000 in another NCAA time of 16:50.90.
Plus,
Valerie Olson won the 100-meter hurdles and
Mary McKey raced past the competition in the 400 hurdles with a mark of 1:00.86. That latter mark was also an NCAA provisional time.
Also of note,
Bella Driver,
Kyndall Hicks and
Savanna Meek were instrumental in OBU attaining a bunch of points in the 100 hurdles. In that order, they finished second, fourth and fifth place.
Furthermore,
Kimberly McKinney,
Kaylen King and
Shayna Hendrix took second, third and fourth, respectively, in the 800. They posted times of 2:12.05, 2:12.93 and 2:13.53 and accumulated 19 points.
Zoee Weaver also scored in that race, securing a trio of points.
Lastly, King took fifth in the 1,500 with a time of 4:41.77.
Brian Whitlock was named GAC Coach of the Year by the end of the meet while the Bison ran their GAC-record outdoor title streak to four years.
Next on the schedule for the green and gold is the NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships in Pueblo, Col., from May 22-24. Names of those student-athletes that are selected will be announced at a later time.
