Brian Whitlock

Brian Whitlock was named the head men’s and women’s cross country coach in August of 2022 and the head men's and women's track and field coach in August of 2023. Whitlock served one year as the assistant track and field coach before being promoted.

Whitlock came to OBU after spending 2004-2022 at Wayland Baptist as the head cross country and track and field coach. While at Wayland, Whitlock turned the Pioneer cross country and track and field programs into perennial powerhouses.

Whitlock’s superior run included 12 national championships, a dozen more runner-ups, 106 individual or relay national titles, and 105 all-conference runners. His success saw nine NAIA Coach of the Year awards, becoming one of the most successful coaches in Wayland Baptist athletics history.

Furthermore, Whitlock captured an astonishing 575 All-American honors as head coach. During his tenure, WBU student-athletes earned 10 most valuable performer awards at national meets, set 50 school records, and broke eight national marks. Whitlock’s squads also enjoyed some impressive streaks, winning national titles in the men’s 4x400 at nine consecutive championships and finishing in the top four at 14 straight indoor and outdoor championships over a seven-year period.

In 2018, he led both the men’s and women’s cross country teams to national indoor titles. It marked just the third time in Wayland Baptist history for that to happen and the first time in 30 years.

Whitlock is a 2001 graduate of Oklahoma Baptist, where he was a Sooner Athletic Conference cross country champion and an NAIA All-American.

Whitlock resides in Shawnee with his wife Mandy and four kids, Madilynn, Jacob, Londyn, and Brayden.
