SHAWNEE – Head Oklahoma Baptist softball coach
Jace Brewer and staff announced the signing of Jorja Barrett and Haley Hacker to its stacked signing class on Friday.
The latest additions join the six signees that were inked in December, bringing this season's class total to eight.
Barrett, a pitcher, comes to OBU after two seasons at Division I Utah Valley University. There, she recorded a 5-4 record in 70.2 innings pitched and 32 appearances. She also tallied 37 strikeouts, and one save in her career with the Wolverines.
"Jorja brings a wealth of experience to the OBU program," Brewer said. The knowledge and skills she has learned from her five years as a college pitcher are tremendous. We will lean heavily on that expertise as she finishes up her graduate degree at OBU."
Barrett picked up two wins last season, including an outing against New Mexico State where she led Utah Valley to a comeback victory after tossing two shutout innings. She also earned a win at Tarleton State after striking out three across 4.1 innings.
As a junior in 2023, she earned three wins and finished the year with 25 punchouts over 48.2 frames. Barrett held the best strikeout rate on the team (0.51/inning), posted a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage (no errors in 14 chances), and twirled her first complete game win over New Mexico State, where she allowed two earned runs and fanned four.
Before Utah Valley, Barrett played one season at Howard College (Texas) and two years at Pensacola State College (Florida). At Howard, she registered a 10-4 record and racked up 77 strikeouts across 72.0 innings of work.
In two seasons at Pensacola State, Barrett owned a 20-9 record and compiled 144 strikeouts in 154.2 innings. A native of Sydney, Australia, she began her playing career at St. Patrick's College.
Barrett won the U-17 and U-19 Australian national championships, representing her home state of New South Wales. She was also a part of the Australian national team that placed fourth at the U-19 World Cup and was a Gold medalist at the 2017 Pacific school games.
Hacker, an incoming freshman pitcher/utility from Prague, Okla., attended North Rock Creek High School. Her accolades include earning Middle East All-State honors and being named the District Pitcher of the Year.
The twirler recorded 655 career strikeouts, including 200 as a senior, and led the Cougars to an appearance in the 2023 OSSAA Class 4A Softball State Tournament.
"Haley is a great local talent that fits our program perfectly," said Brewer. "A servant-hearted leader who will have an incredible impact during her four years on Bison Hill. Also, being a pitcher/utility, she'll fill a need almost anywhere we play her. We're very blessed to welcome both young ladies to Bison Softball!"
