Box Score SHAWNEE – OBU Volleyball finishes the week 2-0 for the second consecutive week after a Friday night win over Southern Arkansas.
The win over the Muleriders marked the second sweep of the week for the Bison after a Thursday night sweep of Arkansas Monticello.
The Friday night match against Southern Arkansas ended in favor of Oklahoma Baptist. Set one saw a 27-25 final for the green and gold. The second frame saw the Bison on top at 25-22 and the third set ended 25-20 for an OBU sweep in enemy territory.
The Bison amassed 69 digs, eight blocks, 44 kills, seven aces, 42 assists and 59.0 points.
Jill Leslie and
Rylee Unruh led the OBU offense with 10 kills a-piece.
Avery Hellmuth added seven kills for the green and gold.
Emily Boyer tallied three aces. Leslie contributed a pair of aces and Hellmuth came in with one ace. Leslie headed the Bison defense with six blocks.
Set 1
Allie Stricker started things off to open up set one with a kill, putting the visitors on the board first. A three-score run saw the Muleriders take the lead. The green and gold answered with a trio of kills to take control of the scoreboard. A couple of points took the lead back for the home team, but the next two points went to OBU for a one-point lead at 6-5. Four more ties added up to a 12-12 score, but Leslie put the Bison back in front with a kill. Unruh and Leslie showed up defensively to take the next point with a block, seeing OBU back in the lead at 14-12. The race to 25 continued as a 3-0 run for the Muleriders knotted things up at 18-18. The next point tied but the Bison claimed the next four points with kills from Sticker and Leslie, a block from Leslie and
Jh'Kyah Head and an error from the home team for a 23-19 total. SAU took the next pair of points. An error from the blue and yellow added another to the board for OBU. A 3-0 run kept the Muleriders in the game, tying things up at 24-24. A kill from Head saw the green and gold first to 25 but the home team answered with a kill of their own. Hellmuth and Unruh came alive with a couple of kills to close the door on a comeback for SAU at 27-25, OBU.
Set 2
In the second stanza the Muleriders were first on the board. The frame saw three ties until the Bison came in with a 3-0 run to lead 7-4. As Unruh came in with a kill for the eighth OBU point, the home team added three to tie things up at 8-8. After a tie at the ninth point, Leslie came in hot with three back-to-back kills to put the Bison up 12-9. From there, the green and gold held the lead with a trio of 3-0 runs for a 22-14 lead. The Muleriders caught fire with a 7-0 run to make it a one-point deficit for the home team at 22-21. Leslie brought the total to 24 with a kill and Boyer locked up the second set with an ace for a 25-22 final.
Set 3
The final set opened with a kill from the Muleriders. Head and Unruh came in with a kill each to take the lead. Eight ties led to a scoreboard knotted up at 11-11. The next three points went to OBU to take the lead at 14-11. The remainder of the set saw the Bison in front. Leslie started a four-score run with a kill. An SAU error followed to pair with a block from Leslie to see the green and gold up 23-19. Boyer got back to business with an ace for set point. The final kill for the Muleriders came next and an error from the home team added the final point for OBU for a 25-20 final for set three and a 3-0 match final.
Next up
The Bison will be back at home Oct. 24 to take on Arkansas Tech with a 7 p.m. match time. The Thursday evening meeting with the Golden Suns will welcome a Halloween Bash theme in Noble Complex. The best family costume and best student costume in attendance will receive OBU Athletic prizes.
