Bison Dismantle Tigers, Extend Win Streak to 10

SHAWNEE – #24 Oklahoma Baptist volleyball put together one of its finest all-around performances of the season as it dominated visiting Ouachita Baptist, 3-0, in a Great American Conference match on Friday, Oct. 16, at the Noble Complex.

The Bison (19-4, 11-0 GAC) picked up their 10th win in a row and put themselves yet another match in front of the second-place Tigers (12-11, 8-3), increasing their lead in the GAC standings to three matches with just five yet to play.

In the first set, OBU used a 5-0 run to turn a one-point lead into a 9-3 advantage and, after the Tigers cut into the deficit midway through the match, mounted another 5-0 run to stretch the lead to 18-9. A kill by Rylee Unruh would end the set at 25-15 and give the Bison a 1-0 match lead.

The second set saw Ouachita take an early 5-1 advantage, but Oklahoma Baptist battled back to tie things at 10. The Bison would use a 5-1 run to take a 17-16 edge late in the set and never relinquished the lead, earning a 25-22 second-set win on another kill by Unruh to take a 2-0 advantage in the match.

OBU dominated the third set as it took a 3-0 lead and never trailed. The Bison led by as many as eight points on several occasions in the late stages of the set and, for the third-straight set, got the winning kill from Unruh in a 25-19 third-set victory.

Unruh led all players with 13 kills while adding 12 digs, two aces, and a block assist. Melody Donegan had 12 kills, two block assists, and hit .409 on the day. Taya McReynolds added nine kills of her own, while Mackenzie Frazee (6) and Addison Dale (5) also contributed kills from the middle. Emily Boyer had 43 assists, nine digs and two aces, while Elle Parisi had a match-high 14 digs.

The Bison limited Ouachita Baptist's leading attacker, Sophie Henry, to just four kills and held the Tigers to just .132 on the attack as Ouachita failed to have a player tally double-digit kills. Oklahoma Baptist finished with an 8-2 advantage in service aces and .267 on the attack.

NOTES
  • Oklahoma Baptist's 10-match win streak is the best since 2021, when the Bison also won 10 in a row.
  • A win in its next match would give OBU its 13th season with 20 or more wins under head coach Anna Howle.
  • Mackenzie Frazee ended the day with 201 career blocks. She needs 43 more to move into the top 10 in program history for career blocks.
  • The Bison improved to 10-5 all-time against Ouachita Baptist, including a 5-1 mark when facing the Tigers at home.
  • Oklahoma Baptist has won 27 of its 35 sets in GAC play this year.
