RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – Sophomore defensive back Chase Whitebear has been named the Great American Conference Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced Monday afternoon.
The accolade comes after Whitebear turned in a stat sheet for the ages in OBU's 36-3 defeat of Southeastern Oklahoma State on Saturday. It is his first time to earn the GAC's weekly honor.
The Haslet, Texas native recorded an interception and fumble recovery, returning each for 29 and 11 yards, respectively. It marked his fourth career interception and first fumble recovery. Furthermore, it was just the fourth time an OBU defender has tallied a fumble and pick in the same game.
Whitebear also tied for the most tackles on the team, registering eight total stops that included seven solo tackles. Lastly, he notched a pass breakup.
This season, Whitebear leads Oklahoma Baptist in pass breakups (3) while ranking fifth in tackles (12.0) and second for interceptions (1). In the conference, he ranks in a tie for second for passes defended and in a tie for third in interceptions.
Whitebear and company will return to the gridiron on Saturday, Sept. 23, for a 6:00 p.m. contest at East Central.
