Merryweather Called Up to Blue Jays

SHAWNEE – Julian Merryweather will become the second OBU baseball alumnus to make a major league appearance as the 6-4 right hander was called up to the Toronto Blue Jays active 28-man roster on Tuesday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. CT as the Jays take on Baltimore from Orioles Park at Camden Yards.

"Couldn't be more thrilled for Julian" said former OBU baseball coach Bobby Cox. "Julian is a great example of what hard work and focus will do. I am excited to see him get a chance to stand on a big league mound"

Merryweather was drafted in the fifth round of the 2014 Major League Baseball Draft by the Cleveland Indians. The Berkeley, California, native was acquired by the Blue Jays via trade in 2018.

He underwent Tommy John surgery in 2018, starting a long road of recovery that saw him pitch a combined 12 innings between the Minors and the Arizona Fall League.

Merryweather did make a start in Blue Jays Spring Training, allowing one run on two hits as he opened things up with two strikeouts and was touching 96 mph on radar guns in the stadium.

Merryweather had an outstanding career at OBU with a 22-5 record over two seasons. The All-American had a career ERA of just 1.73 in 182 innings pitched after tying the second-lowest ERA in program history with 1.07 in 2014. He registered 208 strikeouts with the Bison.
