SHAWNEE – Following the Great American Conference announcement that its Council of Presidents approved changes to the league's upcoming football schedules due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Oklahoma Baptist football team announced their altered schedule on Tuesday afternoon.
The 2020 football season now consists of the GAC's 12 member schools playing a 10-game conference schedule that will begin on Thursday, Sept. 10. The 10-game slate corresponds with changes to maximum playing seasons passed by the NCAA Division II Presidents Council earlier this month. Oklahoma Baptist saw its opener against Henderson State canceled with the remainder of the schedule undergoing substantial changes.
OBU will now open the season on Thursday, Sept. 10, at home against Southern Arkansas at 6 p.m. It will be the first Thursday night home game in OBU's history.
The Bison will then hit the road on Sept. 19 for a 6 p.m. matchup against Arkansas-Monticello before returning home on Sept. 26 against Arkansas Tech at 6 p.m.
Two straight road games come next for OBU as they battle Harding (Oct. 3) at 2 p.m. and Southwestern Oklahoma State (Oct. 10) at 2 p.m. The Bison return home on Oct. 17 against Northwestern Oklahoma State at 1 p.m., followed by a 6 p.m. tilt at East Central on Oct. 24.
OBU's Homecoming remains on Oct. 31, but with a different opponent as the Bison will battle Southeastern Oklahoma State at 1 p.m.
The Bison saw the most significant change to their schedule on Nov. 7, as what was a home game against three-time GAC champion Ouachita will now be in Arkadelphia for the second straight year. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
OBU will close the regular season with rival Southern Nazarene visiting Crain Family Stadium at the Hurt Complex on Nov. 14 at 1 p.m.
In 2019, Oklahoma Baptist completed its most successful season since joining NCAA Division II at 7-4 under eighth year head coach
Chris Jensen. The Bison have won 11 straight games over Oklahoma schools, and completed a second consecutive perfect record against their in-state conference counterparts (5-0), including the final three contests of 2018.
