INDIANAPOLIS – Oklahoma Baptist finished up a strong first-day of competition crowning two All-Americans at the NCAA Division II Swim and Dive Championships. OBU swimmer Victoria Fonville and diver Otto Lehtonen each were recognized as tops in their discipline finishing second in both of their events.
Fonville had a personal best of 22.51 in the 50 free, finishing 0.21 seconds behind eventual winner Polina Lapshina of Queens (N.C.) College.
Lehtonen had a school-record score of 565 points in the three meter diving competition. He finished just 30 points off the score posted by eventual winner Amar Hassan of Colorado Mesa.
OBU's women stand in seventh place with 38 points. Defending Champion Queens College is first with 120 points. The OBU men are in 16th place with 17 points.
Marizel Van Jaarsveld won top consolation by finishing first in the 200 IM race of non-finalists. She turned in a time of 2.01.90. The 200 Medley Relay team finished 11th with a time of 1:42.76. The team consisted of Maddie Carson, Juliana Cifuentes, Julie Day and Fonville.
Both OBU men and women should climb in the team standings Thursday as both the 200 Freestyle and 400 Medley Relays will be finalized.Â
