OBU Following Up on Strong RMAC Meet

SHAWNEE – Oklahoma Baptist heads to its final qualifying meet at the Mizzou NCAA Qualifier in Columbia Friday.
 
OBU is coming off several strong swims at the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships – so strong, in fact, that Coach Sam Freas thinks it might have been the best meet the teams have ever had.
 
"In reflecting on the RMAC Championships, it appears that OBU quite possibly had its greatest swimming and diving meet ever," Freas said.
 
The Bison and Lady Bison won the most events (19), broke a meet-best nine RMAC records and broke 12 school records. And the teams finished second in men's and third in women's.
 
"Right now we have 21 qualified for NCAAs with two additional people on the cusp of being invited." Freas said. "Currently, on the DII national (CollegeSwimming.com dual) rankings, the OBU men are ranked third, and the OBU women are ranked 11th in the nation."
 
For the women, Victoria Fonville has an automatic qualifying and top national time in the 50 free and Tammy Price is seventh.
 
Price also is ranked sixth in the 50 backstroke. Celina Marquez is second with an automatic mark in the 100 backstroke while Suzanne Afchain is ranked sixth and Price seventh in that event. Marquez is third nationally in the 200 back with Afchain ranking 11^th and Price 17^th.
 
Marizel Van Jaarsveld is No. 10 and Juliana Cifuentes 15^th in the 100 breaststroke. Cifuentes is 25^th in the 200 breaststroke.
 
Marquez is fifth in the 100 butterfly with Price ranked 14^th and Faith Moss 15^th. Moss also is 28^th in the 200 fly.
 
Van Jaarsveld is No. 4 and Cifuentes No. 24 in the 200 individual medley. Van Jaarsveld also is No. 6 in the 400 IM.
 
In relay events, OBU is sixth in the 200 medley, seventh in the 200 free, eighth in the 400 free and 400 medley and 22^nd in the 800 free.
 
Genesis Veliz is ninth in three-meter and 20^th in one-meter diving.
 
As for the Bison, David Lambert has the top time in the 50 free with an automatic mark while Chad Brandon is ranked third, JP Goyetche seventh and Andre del Rio eighth in that event. Lambert is fourth in the 100 meters, also with an A standard, with Goyetche ranked ninth and Del Rio 20^th.
 
Marti Penedes is ranked 10^th in the 500 and 1650 free and 12^th in the 1000 free.
 
Goyetche is ranked 12^th and Felipe Ramirez Zapata 14^th in the 50 backstroke. Goyetche also is 12^th and Zapata 23^rd in the 100 back. Zapata is 20^th in the 200 back.
 
Fernando Morillas Ramos is eighth, Davion Conley ninth and Brandon 30^th in the 100 breaststroke. Morillas is 10^th in the 200 breaststroke.
 
Zapata is 18^th and Del Rio 19^th in the 100 butterfly. Kristijan Stunkovic is ninth in the 200 breast, followed by Tristan Villa at 22^nd and Zapata at 24^th.
 
Stunkovic is 25^th in the 400 individual medley.
 
The OBU men in relays are No. 1 in the 200 free relay, fifth in the 200 and 400 medley, eighth in the 400 free relay and 21^st in the 800 free relay.
 
Otto Lehtonen is ninth in three-meter and 12^th in one-meter diving.
