COLUMBIA, Mo. – Oklahoma Baptist almost surprisingly made a statement the first day of the Mizzou Invitational Thursday.
"We now have the best times in a lot of events in Division 2 and we shouldn't," said OBU Coach Sam Freas, who hadn't counted on the rocket leaving the launch pad until the Texas meet. "We have not swum as good as we can. But we're racing. I'm encouraged by how we are doing."
Freas left behind his distance swimmers, almost every freshman and some athletes who were unhealthy.
David Lambert and Victoria Fonville are approaching division records in the 50 free and have taken over the lead in Division II for the season.
Lambert posted 19:40 and Fonville turned in a 22.60 in the 50 free to take over the No. 1 spot for their respective genders.
The men's 200 free relay posted a national-best 1:19.23 with Lambert,
Chad Brandon, Andre Del Rio and Austin Saunders losing only to Missouri.
Kristijan Stunkovic finished at 1:51.10 in the 200 individual medley, which is second in the division.
The women's 400 medley relay team of Tamlyn Price, Miriam Avila, Faith Moss and Fonville took over the top spot at 3:48.33.
The meet continues Friday.
