GAC-MIAA Crossover Notes |
SHAWNEE – Oklahoma Baptist Volleyball plays host to the Great American Conference-Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association Crossover Tournament on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 16-17 inside the Noble Complex. The Lady Bison will play four teams from the MIAA: Pittsburg State (Sept. 16, 12:00 p.m.), No. 14 Washburn (Sept. 16, 6:00 p.m.), Southwest Baptist (Sept. 17, 9:00 a.m.) and Emporia State (Sept. 17, 3:00 p.m.).
Â
The GAC-MIAA Crossover features 12 teams, including all six of the Oklahoma-based GAC schools, as well as six members of the MIAA. Oklahoma Baptist will carry two courts simultaneously on both days of the Crossover, while co-host Central Oklahoma is set to host one court in Edmond, Oklahoma.
Â
Oklahoma Baptist snapped a six-match win streak ahead of the Crossover thanks to a straight-set victory over Northwestern Oklahoma State, and the Lady Bison now sit at 4-6 on the year, though they are now tied for first in the conference standings at 1-0.
Mikayla Watson and
Nicole Fleitman continue to lead the team at 3.10 and 3.09 kills per set respectively, but received a boost on Tuesday as
Shekinah Sharpe returned to the lineup for the first time in five matches, recording 11 kills on the night to bump her set average to 2.11.
Â
Defensively,
Sierra VeraCruz set a new single-match career high with 22 digs against Northwestern, and is leading the team with a 3.38 dig set average. Sharpe contributed 14 digs on Tuesday night to the defensive cause, recording her first career double-double; she averages 3.32 digs/set.
Cadyn Laing and
Taylor Williams have been a dominant duo at the net for OBU, with Laing ranking fourth in the GAC at .97 blocks/set, while Williams is averaging .75 blocks/set.
Â
The four MIAA opponents set to face the Lady Bison have a combined record of 13-19. Washburn will likely prove the most challenging foe of the weekend, as they've ridden a hot start to 2016 all the way to the No. 14 ranking by the American Volleyball Coaches Association.
