LAWRENCE, Kan. – Oklahoma Baptist swimmers hit the water Saturday in Kansas for the first open water event in which the Bison and Lady Bison have participated.
Â
The Collegiate Open Water Championship at Lone Star Lake is hosted by the University of Kansas and features a team scoring format similar to the sport of cross country.
Â
Three-swimmer teams will combine their individual times to produce a race winner. The five-kilometer race begins at 8 a.m.
Â
"It's kind of a throwback race," said OBU Coach Sam Freas. "We worked out at Lake Tenkiller to prepare. If you've never raced open water before it can be a shock."
Â
Joining OBU and Kansas are Albion, Alaska-Fairbanks, Carson-Newman, Ohio Wesleyan and Colorado Mines.
Â
The Bison and Lady Bison continue the season next week with a dual against St. Gregory's at the Shawnee Aqua Park Thursday, Sept. 22.
