Men's Track & Field

The Making of a Champion

Oklahoma Baptist, in its first NCCAA national meet, blew the doors off the competition, winning two national championships. While a title was perhaps expected on the women's side, the men's team won by a surprisingly wide margin.

Coach Ford Mastin talked exclusively with OBUBison.com about his NCCAA Men's and Women's Coaching Staff of the Year, the behind-the-scenes determination of the team and each of the student-athletes who registered points in leading OBU to the 21st and 22nd national titles in program history.

THE COACHES
"The OBU Track program is blessed to have the expertise and commitment of some excellent assistant track coaches. Pete Kron commutes several times a week to instruct our throwing events, and our athletes are grateful for his many years of experience.

"Mark Heard continues to build on the tradition he started at OBU of quality pole vaulting.  Six of our vaulters scored at this past national meet, and we are confident that the point total will be even greater at the Outdoor Championships.  Coach Heard also manages the men's distance program that contributed valuable points to our championship effort.

"Matt Kennedy provides the OBU program with the focus on operational details that are extremely challenging.  He made our trip with 61 individuals operate smoothly with attention to every possible detail.  Coach Kennedy was also responsible for an impressively dominating performance by our distance girls.  OBU won every distance event at the national meet."

THE TEAM
"At Marion, Indiana, we counted 24 families that traveled to support their children.  It's easy to see why our student-athletes behave so well and are a consistent witness for Christ and good ambassadors for OBU.  They have loyal, committed parents that model wonderful behavior.

"We knew that the women's team would win.  The predictions seemed solid, and the girls always establish championship behaviors from the first day of practice, all through the season.

"Two of our best veteran performers were not able to compete at the level we are accustomed to.  Brenda Barnett and Abby Mayfield were going to be competing a step lower than normal.  You could sense the other girls were dedicated to doing more that they were expected to do.  On Thursday night, the teams sat down and wrote on a piece of paper what points they were dedicating themselves to score during the two days of competition.  We totaled what they had dedicated and then watched the girls score in one event after the other until the meet was over.  The real total was two points higher than the girls had dedicated.  It is a great performance to win when you are expected to win, and to not let anything deter you from achieving your goal.

"In all of our predictions for the men's competition, our battle with defending champion Bethel (Indiana) was about even.  It's no secret that the women's teams have won far more team championships than the men.  These guys wanted to change that. We had meetings in January that dealt with what it means to win, and the seniors on the team took it upon themselves to call meetings with the entire men's team to discuss and instruct them on how to conduct themselves.  This trip was different from the first time we stepped on the bus to leave our campus.  We knew the men meant business.  The point production dedicated by the men during Thursday's meeting was within one point of the actual score.  The guys pulled together and refused to lose.  It was inspiring to watch event after event happen with guys giving complete effort.  With each successful event, it seemed the next  guy up was simply waiting for his turn to play his role.  It was fun to watch.

"It is very impressive to travel to competition with all the things that could go wrong, and perform at the level required to win.  Regardless of the competition, their performances were still the best they had ever been.  Records were set on a small, indoor track with no banks, that our guys had never run even on the oversize tracks that faster times are expected.  Their performances truly were impressive.  I would like to say that we added to the quality of the NCCAA meet.  Our behavior at the meet was also the kind that added to the Christian atmosphere that was expected.  This was a great weekend in the history of OBU Track and Field."
