BLUE SPRINGS, Mo. – Morgan Simmons finished in a tie for ninth to help lead Oklahoma Baptist to an 11th-place finish at the season-opening Central Region Fall Preview at Adams Pointe Golf Club.
OBU was off to a fine start after the first round, finishing in a tie for fifth place (+14). At that point, the Bison were the second-best Great American Conference squad, behind perennial contender Henderson State (+13).
For Simmons, she was stellar in the opening round. The Memphis, Tenn., native was one-under (35) through the first nine before finishing even-par (72). She pared 13 of 18 holes and added a trio of birdies.
Sophomore teammate
Marta Romero Crespo was solid, too, in the first. She fired a three-over 75 which included an even-par back nine performance.
Wednesday's action wasn't as kind to OBU, though. After shooting plus-14 on day one, the green and gold were 30-over on day two. The team's best performers, again, were Simmons and Cresp who each shot 76s.
By the end of the tournament, Simmons was in a tie for ninth, Crespo in a tie 20th and freshman
Priscilla Gant earning a top-50 finish in her collegiate debut.
Rounding out the Bison's competitors were newcomers
Ines Diaz and
Paisley Eason. Diaz was six-over in the first round but couldn't find that touch in round two (+18). As for Eason, another freshman on the squad, she went plus-11 and plus-14 over the two rounds.
Next on the schedule for OBU is the 19th Annual Northeastern State Classic at Tulsa's Page Belcher Stone Creek Golf Course on Sept. 8-9.
