MONKEY ISLAND – Sophomore
Morgan Simmons finished four-over par and in a tie for 19th place during the Central Spring Preview hosted by Central Missouri on Tuesday at Shangri-La Country Club.
As a team, Oklahoma Baptist, which went against three, top-27 Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) squads, finished in 14th place out of 20 schools.
Simmons, a native of Memphis, Tenn., had a solid first round where she shot a five-over 77. She pared 15 of the 18 holes. During the second round, she reeled off three consecutive birdies on holes four through six before adding two more birdies on holes 13 and 14. To cap off her efforts, Simmons closed the par-five, 18th hole with another birdie.
By the end of the tournament, she shot 148.
The Bison's next best finisher was
Josefina Serres Scheffer. Her first round didn't go as planned (+12), but her second round was very solid. In fact, the sophomore from Argentina birdied four of the last six holes. Scheffer finished in a tie for 53rd by the end (158).
Teammates
Marta Romero Crespo and
Gimena Errecart rounded out OBU's performers. Each finished in a tie for 64th. For Crespo, she fired a nine-over 81 in the opening round before improving in the second. On Tuesday, Crespo added three birdies to finish seven-over.
Errecart had four double-bogeys in round one to finish 11-over (83) but vastly improved in the second, completing the 5,813-yard course with a five-over 77.
Also of note, junior
Sam Lehr started play in the first round before retiring in the second due to injury.
Next on the schedule for OBU is the Great American Conference Championship in Fort Smith, Ark., on April 21-23.
