Preview: Bison Softball Pays Visit to Northwestern

SHAWNEE – Oklahoma Baptist (22-14, 15-5 GAC) returns to action this coming weekend at Northwestern Oklahoma State. On April 6, the two teams meet for the series opener beginning at 4 p.m. before a Monday, April 7 doubleheader beginning at noon.

Bison Notes
  • One key reason for the series defeat at Southeastern last week was the Bison offense.
  • Over three games, they batted .189, the lowest total versus a GAC opponent the past two seasons. Included in that was a 2-for-21 performance (.095) in two-out hitting.
  • Kaley Cook (.444) and Greenlee Wells (.429) did fare well though, each batting above .400. For Wells, she had three extra-base hits: a double, triple and homer.
  • Wells, along with Sammie Greene and Morgan Max, are tied for the GAC lead with 10 homers.
  • For the program, it's the first time in the D2 era (2016-pres.) that a Bison club has three players with double-digit home run totals.
  • Also of note, OBU is one of only two teams in the country with three players with 10 homers. The other is Wingate University (NC) of the South Atlantic Conference.
  • Among other key offensive points, OBU ranks fourth in the nation with 49 bombs and is 15th in slugging (.528).
  • Plus, individually, Max is No. 17 in D2 with 43 RBI; Cook ranks top-14 in stolen bases (31) and triples (5); Greene's 84 total bases ranks 40th
  • In the circle, Jaycee Shaffer's 12 wins are slotted 29th while Max's three saves are No. 24.
  • One significant advantage for the Bison in this upcoming series is along the base paths. OBU has 87 stolen bases while the Lady Rangers have totaled eight.
Lady Rangers Notes
  • Northwestern has lost six straight after dropping a pair of games at No. 6 Central Oklahoma on April 1.
  • The Lady Rangers are 9-25 this season and 5-15 in the GAC.
  • Remarkably, NWOSU has lost 17 straight to the Bison. Their last win was Feb. 25, 2019 by a 7-5 tally.
  • With a 10.06 hits allowed per seven innings mark, Northwestern leads the GAC in that category.
  • Also of note, the Lady Rangers are ranked in the top-half of the league with six triples and a .284 batting average.
  • On the downside, NWOWU's 5.01 ERA in next to last (11th) in the GAC and its .952 fielding mark is at the bottom.
  • Senior Avery Clark leads Northwestern with a .380 batting average. That mark is top-ten in the conference as well.
  • Rosemary Rivera has posted team-highs in homers (5) and RBI (21) while also registering seven doubles.
  • Lastly, Jadyn Muns has been solid for Northwestern. She has a .325 average, and boasts team-highs in hits (38) and runs (21).
  • In the circle, Chloe Brown lead with four wins and two saves while Kathryn Jones has a staff-high 43 strikeouts.
  • The Lady Rangers collectively are allowing opponents to hit .330 this season and have allowed 80 extra-base hits in 34 contests.
