OBU Baseball ends weekend series against HSU in win column with Sunday afternoon win

SHAWNEE – OBU Baseball refused to finish the weekend action on a negative note with a Sunday afternoon victory to fend off a road sweep from the Reddies.

The Bison faced a tough Henderson State offense in Day 1 of action where Henderson State claimed the series with back-to-back wins in Games 1 and 2.

Game 3 saw the Bison bring a different type of fight as Oklahoma Baptist made the bigger impact offensively, closing out the series with an 8-7 win over the Reddies.

In the fifth inning as the green and gold were down three, DJ Van Atten brought life back to the Bison with a three-run homer to keep OBU in the game, totaling a 5-5 score.

In the seventh inning, and RBI single from Lucas Schaefer began closing the two-run deficit for OBU and a two RBI single from Zane Bennett gave the Bison the edge with a one-run lead. Ultimately the late offensive efforts from OBU sealed the deal for the green and gold after the Reddies failed to get things back in motion at the plate.

Van Atten had the lone homer of the day while Schaefer, Keenan Morris and Jayden Shafer eat compiled doubles for the Bison.

The green and gold totaled eight runs on seven hits, seven RBI, three doubles, and one homerun.

Of the seven hits for OBU, Schaefer went 2-3 at the plate with one RBI. Matt Marsic went 1-4, Van Atten went 1-5 (3 RBI), and Bennett (2 RBI), Morris and Shafer (1 RBI) all finished 1-3.

Nick Meyer (W, 1-0) earned his first win of the season after 1.2 innings on the mound, giving up one earned run on two hits, walking one batter and striking out one.

William Elli (S, 1) earned his first collegiate career save after closing out the run for OBU with 1.1 innings on the mound, giving up no runs, one hit, walking on batter and striking out one.

Ryan Turbeville got the Bison through the first 3.1 innings, giving up four earned runs on seven hits, walking none and striking out six.

Marcus Peters was first out of the bullpen with 2.1 innings pitched, giving up two earned runs on two hits, walking one and striking out two.

The green and gold were able to turn things around and close out the weekend with a win to head into midweek play on a good note. The Bison will host SWOSU on Tuesday evening for midweek action with a 5 p.m. first pitch.
