Bison Baseball struggles offensively in doubleheader with Henderson State Saturday

SHAWNEE – Oklahoma Baptist Baseball dropped both games in the first day of the series with the Reddies.

The green and gold took a pair of tough losses to close out the opening day of the three-game series with Henderson State. 

Game 1 saw the Reddies shut out the Bison with a 9-0 final. 

The second game followed with the OBU offense waking up but not soon enough as the seven-inning game ending in a 6-3 victory for the visitors. 

Game 1
In the opening game against the Reddies, HSU totaled nine runs on eight hits with no errors as the Bison compiled no runs on six hits with three errors. 

The Reddies got things going early with two runs in the first stanza. Another pair came across in the third and the fourth inning followed the pattern. The seventh inning saw another pair across for Henderson State and the final run of the game came in the eighth.

Matt Marsic had the lone double in the first game for OBU, going 1-5 at the plate. 

DJ Van Atten, Spencer Dickinson, Zane Bennett, Keenan Morris, Jayden Shafer and Marsic each tallied a hit to total six for the Bison. The green and gold saw 10 runners left stranded throughout the nine innings of play. 

David Stuart (L, 4-2) was dealt his second loss of the season after 6.1 innings on the mound, giving up eight runs, five earned, on seven hits. Stuart walked a pair, tallied one wild pitch and totaled seven strikeouts. 

Javarian Roquemore came in as the reliever with 2.2 innings on the bump, giving up one run on one earned hit. Roquemore totaled two walks and four strikeouts.

Game 2
In the second game, the Reddies were first to strike with a single run coming across in the third inning. The next inning saw the visitors total four runs as the Bison scored one in the bottom of the fourth to finally find the board. OBU got back to work offensively in the fifth with another pair of runs tallied, but the Reddies got the final say with a solo run in the top of the sixth to bring the total to 6-3 for Henderson State. 

HSU compiled six runs on 11 hits with one error as OBU totaled three runs on six hits with three errors.

Lucas Schaefer led the offensive efforts for the green and gold in the second game with a homer and a double to go 1-2 at the plate. 

Braden Smith had the other homer for the Bison, ending Game 2 1-3 at the plate. 

Alongside Schaefer and Smith, Morris, Spencer Dickinson and Shafer contributed to the hits count for the Bison. The green and gold left four runners on base in the second game.

Morris went 2-3 at the plate while Schaefer and Dickinson went 1-2 and Shafer and Smith went 1-3 at the plate. 

Bryant Thornton got the start in Game 2 for OBU giving up three earned runs on three hits, three balls and totaling four strikeouts in 3.1 innings on the bump. 

Logan Kimbro (L,0-1) took the loss after 3.1 innings on the mound, giving up three runs, two earned, on seven hits, walking no batters and totaling seven strikeouts. 

Jalen Johnston closed things out for the green and gold with 0.1 inning on the mound, giving up no runs on one hit. 

The pair of losses will see the Bison move to 8-6 in conference play with Game 3 left, set for a 1 p.m. first pitch on Sunday.
