SHAWNEE – Oklahoma Baptist will look to build upon last week's momentum when it hosts Southwestern Oklahoma State on Feb. 28 and March 1 at Bison Softball Park.
Game one comes Friday night at 6 p.m. before a Saturday doubleheader beginning at noon. Since 2016, OBU and SWOSU have met 25 times with the Bison holding a 14-11 advantage. That includes wins in the last six, including three run-rule games.
Todd Miller will be on the call Friday while communications director
Clayton Coffman will get the call of Saturday's games.
Below you'll find notes on both teams.
Bison Notes
- Jaycee Shaffer and Greenlee Wells were named GAC Pitcher and Player of the Week on Tuesday after their performances at Arkansas-Monticello.
- Shaffer has been a crucial aspect to the team so far. After OBU lost standouts Kayleigh Jones and Maggie Place, Shaffer has come in and been fabulous.
- The junior ranks No. 5 in the GAC and 71st nationally with 37 strikeouts. Shaffer also ranks top-50 in strikeouts per seven frames (8.4).
- As for Wells, she batted .556 against UAM and became just the sixth OBU player in the D2 era to record homers in three straight games.
- Prior to Wells, infielder Ally Ryan hit bombs in three consecutive contests last year in the SWOSU series.
- Of note, no OBU player in the Division II era has ever hit homers in four straight games.
- Freshman Kaley Cook notched her third triple in the finale at UAM. Currently, that's a top-30 NCAA mark. In school history, the most three-baggers ever attained was seven by Amy Lassetter in 1984.
- Among OBU's best offensive marks, the squad's 14 homers are No. 2 in the GAC and top-50 nationally while the Bison's 39 stolen bags are second in the conference. Plus, with 70 RBI, the Bison are fourth in the league.
- Worth noting, during the series at Monticello, OBU batted .545 (6-11) with a runner on third and two out and notched seven, 2-out RBI.
- Finally, senior Sammie Greene is producing very well for the green and gold. She's top-three in the GAC in batting (.488), slugging (.854), on-base percentage (.580) and is fourth with 10 stolen bags.
Bulldogs Notes
- Southwestern lost the series to No. 17 Harding but did win the finale last weekend, 5-1. The Bulldogs are 6-7 overall this year and 1-3 in the GAC.
- Offense has been the issue for SWOSU so far. Their team batting average of .252 is 11th out of 12 GAC schools while their .347 slugging percentage is last.
- SWOSU is also 10th and 11th, respectively, in hits (85) and runs scored (41).
- Furthermore, through 13 games, Southwestern has scored three runs or less in eight of those.
- Individually, Riley Lusk has a team-high 10 RBI while Jadyn Hook paces SWOSU with 15 hits.
- Katie Boline has scored a team-high nine runs and is also tied with Hook with three stolen bags.
- In the circle, Alexis Taylor is SWOSU's go-to pitcher. Her 2.73 ERA is 12th in the league while her five wins are slotted third. Plus, her 25 strikeouts are 11th in the GAC.
- In relief, Jaycee McKee has been outstanding with a GAC-high three saves.
- During last year's series with OBU, a 3-0 Bison sweep, Southwestern managed to score just five runs across 17 innings.
