Bison Baseball splits opening day of conference play

MAGNOLIA, Ark. – OBU Baseball claims first win and loss of GAC play after double header against Southern Arkansas

The Bison look to secure the opening series of conference play over Southern Arkansas after finishing Sunday's double header, 1-1. 

OBU Baseball opened up the run in Magnolia with a 3-0 win over the Muleriders but fell one-run short in Game 2 with a 4-3 loss to the home team. 

Game 1 saw the Bison secure their first win of GAC play with one run in the opening stanza and a pair of runs in the eighth inning to total a 3-0 score over the home team.

David Stuart (W, 2-1) earned his second win this season with 6.0 innings on the bump, totaling five strikeouts while giving up no runs on two hits and walking three. 

Jalen Johnston (S,1) got the save with 3.0 innings on the mound, giving up no runs on no hits, compiling two strikeouts and walking three.

OBU totaled three runs on one hit, one double, one stolen base and one double play. 

DJ Van Atten had the lone double in the first game and two RBI to lead the green and gold offensively.

Matt Marsic and Jesse Tisdell scored all the runs for OBU with one from Marsic and a couple from Tisdell. 

The second game saw a 4-3 final in favor the home team. The Bison totaled three runs on five hits with one error while SAU tallied four runs on eight hits with three errors.

Southern Arkansas struck first in the bottom of the opening inning. A pair of runs came across for OBU in the second stanza to see the green and gold take the lead. The fourth inning saw another run across for the Muleriders. The top of the sixth saw OBU break the tie with another run across, but the home team answered with a solo run across as well. A lone run came across in the bottom of the eighth inning for SAU, closing out the evening at 4-3. 

William Ellis (L, 1-1) took the loss as the closer for OBU. Ellis went 2.0 innings on the mound, giving up one run on one hit and walking one. The closer for the Bison compiled four strikeouts, the most strikeouts of OBU pitchers in the second game. 

Bryant Thornton opening up the game for the Bison with 4.2 innings on the bump, giving up two runs on six hits with two errors and walking one. Thornton totaled three strikeouts.

Logan Kimbro also made an appearance on the mound for 1.0 inning, giving up one run on one hit with one error and walking one.

In the second game, Jacob Campbell led the green and gold in RBI with a couple, going 1-1 at the plate with a homer. 

Van Atten had another double in Game 2, going 2-3 at the plate. 

Zane Bennett and Jaxon McAuliff also tallied hits with one-a-piece. OBU left eight runners on base throughout the eighth inning matchup. 

The Bison head into Monday afternoon's matchup in the hopes of securing another win to take the series. Monday's meeting will take place at 1 p.m.
