SHAWNEE — Oklahoma Baptist rallied late to edge Arkansas–Monticello 17–14 on Saturday at Crain Family Stadium, using a fourth-quarter surge to snap a two-game skid.
Trailing 14–7 entering the final period, the Bison (2-4) leaned on a balanced ground attack and a clutch defensive stand to secure the comeback.
Carter Lowry's 22-yard field goal early in the fourth cut the deficit to 14–10, and quarterback
Chad Mascoe capped a 61-yard drive with a 1-yard keeper at the 5:23 mark to give OBU its first lead of the day. The Bison defense then forced a pair of late turnovers to seal the win.
Mascoe finished 11-of-25 passing for 134 yards and a touchdown, adding 23 yards and the decisive rushing score. Receiver
Nick Harris caught three passes for 81 yards, including a 35-yard touchdown in the second quarter that tied the game 7–7. Running back
Deuce Wise led a powerful OBU rushing unit with 99 yards on 19 carries, while
Caden Peevey added 44 yards on the ground.
Arkansas–Monticello quarterback Tavion Faulk accounted for both Boll Weevil touchdowns—an 8-yard run in the second quarter and a 47-yard strike to Chasden Collins in the third. Faulk threw for 254 yards on 20-of-32 passing but was intercepted twice, including a pick by
Richard Smith in the end zone with under a minute to play. Collins tallied six catches for 128 yards to lead all receivers.
OBU outgained UAM 201–158 on the ground and converted 4-of-5 fourth downs, while the Weevils dominated third down efficiency (10-of-15). The Bison defense, led by
Maddux Boyd and
Jahden Brown with eight tackles each, made key stops when it mattered most.
The final UAM turnover, its fourth of the day, was most crucial for the Bison defense. A pass over the middle by Faulk hit the hands of Austin Yeager before
Jojo Wash made a hard hit of the Weevils receiver in between the hashes. That jarred the ball up and Smith caught the deflection to secure victory for OBU.
On top of that interception,
Robert Waters Jr. and
Brady Luff had forced fumbles while
Loren Johnson notched another pick.
Next week, the Bison will head to East Central (4-2) on Oct. 18 to face the Tigers at 3 p.m.
