SHAWNEE – An exciting match between Oklahoma Baptist and Southwestern Oklahoma State unfolded on Wednesday at the OBU Soccer Complex. The Bison got two goals from sophomore
Hali White and won 3-2 over the Bulldogs.
The five combined goals marked the first time since Nov. 3, 2018 that each team scored multiple goals.
Both squads were evenly matched, each recording 18 shots, but OBU capitalized on key moments to claim the win.
SWOSU struck first in the 15th minute with a goal from Hannah Guiterrez, assisted by Madelyn Kitchen. The Bison responded swiftly just two minutes later.
Fifth-year
Alanna Bloomingdale passed from the left end line and watched as freshman
Sam Sheffield headed home the ball. It was her first career goal, and it leveled the score at 1-1.
The second half saw Oklahoma Baptist take the lead in the 63rd minute when
Hali White's header to the left post deflected in.
Ashley Bell assisted on the play and boosted OBU ahead, 2-1. However, that 2-1 tally didn't hold.
In the 82nd minute, Katy Wieters shot from around 35 yards out and watched as the attempt found the upper-right corner on what was a spectacular goal.
However, Oklahoma Baptist wasn't done. Just three minutes later, White struck again. After Sheffield intercepted a pass, and with SWOSU's goalie a little bit outside the 18, White fired into an open net, right side. That gave Oklahoma Baptist the 3-2 lead and ultimately the victory.
Southwestern's goalie, Allie Vasquez, made eight saves but couldn't prevent White's late heroics. OBU's
Claire Stoermer had three saves of her own, preserving the win. Both teams showed their competitive spirit, committing a combined 23 fouls, with Southwestern's Julie Andersen receiving a yellow card late in the match.
This result brought Oklahoma Baptist's record to 2-3-1 (1-0-0 GAC) on the season, while Southwestern Oklahoma dropped to 2-4-1.
Next on the schedule for the Bison is a road match at Northwestern Oklahoma State on Sept. 28.
