Bison Golf – Central Region Fall Preview

SHAWNEE – Oklahoma Baptist's women's golf team tees off its first fall tournament on Sept. 3-4 when it competes in the Central Region Fall Preview. The tournament is hosted by Southwestern Oklahoma State at the Adams Point Golf Club in Blue Springs, Mo.

There are 16 teams competing the next couple of days. Last season, Augustana (SD) won the team title while the Bison finished in sixth, their best-ever showing at that event.

Head Coach Mike Manlapig, who begins his 15th year with the program, spoke to OBUBison.com as his team gets ready for the opening week of competition.

1: The team has competed at Adams Point Golf Club before. Can you describe how that course plays?
"Adams Point Golf Club requires a good mix of distance control, accuracy, and smart course management. It's a course that can be very rewarding for those who play it well, but it can also be punishing if you're not on your game."

2: You mentioned Gimena Errecart and Morgan Simmons as two players you're counting on this season. What are their skill points and how would you like to see them improve this year?
"I have high expectations for our top scorers from last year. They put in a tremendous amount of work over the summer.  This dedication has set a solid foundation, and I'm confident that with a little more consistency in each round, we'll see them reach new heights this season."

3: There are also a couple other returnees that will need to step up. What are your hopes for those athletes?
"For the other returning players, the hope is that they can build on their previous experience and become more consistent contributors to the team's success. Each of them has shown potential, and this season is an opportunity for them to step up and play a more significant role.  Plus, we have added some new players that will have important roles for our success this year."

4: What are your expectations for your team as you start the fall campaign?
"One of the main goals for this first tournament is to build confidence. It's important for the players to start the season strong, gaining momentum that we can carry forward into future competitions. A solid performance here, even if it's not perfect, will help establish a positive mindset."
