SHAWNEE – Former Oklahoma Baptist baseball players Jake Gozzo and Julian Merryweather appeared in Feb. 27th's spring training game between the Cincinnati Reds and Chicago Cubs.
Gozzo, a member of the Reds, and Merryweather, on the Cubs, each tossed one inning at Sloan Park in Mesa, Ariz.
It was Gozzo's first appearance in a Major League Baseball spring training contest. During his playing days in Shawnee, Gozzo notched 32 career homers, fifth-most all-time, was a two-time First Team All-GAC selection, was the GAC's Defensive Player of the Year in 2019 and earned three all-region honors.
Merryweather had an outstanding career at OBU with a 22-5 record over two seasons. The All-American had a career ERA of just 1.73 in 182 innings pitched after tying the second-lowest ERA in program history with 1.07 in 2014. He ended up with 208 strikeouts in his career.
