Bison Prevail over Arkansas-Monticello

SHAWNEE – Oklahoma Baptist (11-15, 8-12 GAC) did what it needed to defeat Arkansas-Monticello on Saturday in Great American Conference action at the Noble Complex. The Bison dialed up a 61-60 victory to complete the season sweep of UAM.
 
The victory kept the Bison in the top-eight of the GAC standings with two regular-season games left. On Feb. 29, OBU will host Southeastern before a March 2 road date with East Central.
 
Key Leaders
  • Jaedyn Getman scored a game-high 18 points and made all five free throws.
  • Madison Chambers reached double-figure scoring for the first time in six games as she contributed 17 points. She also grabbed seven boards, a season-high, and registered three assists and three steals.
  • Parker Stevenson added seven points while classmate Payten Conde contributed five points and three steals.
  • Additionally, Jill Leslie scored six.
What Went Right
  • Defense in the first. OBU benefitted from nine UAM turnovers in the opening period. The Bison collected seven steals in the process and built a 15-9 lead. Conde and Getman provided three-pointers in the process.
  • Chambers. The fifth-year had one of her most complete games this season and she made a trio of deep shots. Her last one, in the third with 55 seconds left, gave OBU a lead (46-44) it would never relinquish.
  • Second-chance points. This was a massive statistical advantage for the hosts. They had a plus-23 (27-4) margin over Monticello.
  • Closing strong. In the last 90 seconds, OBU and Monticello were tied 57-all. Leslie then scored four straight to give the Bison the necessary cushion to win.
What Went Wrong
  • OBU was actually outscored in the second, third and fourth quarters. The hosts also were outshot; the Blossoms made 44 percent from the field and 42 from three.
  • As for the Bison, they made 33 percent overall and 28 percent from three-point range.
  • The green and gold committed 12 turnovers and watched as UAM scored 17 off those.
On The Horizon
  • The Feb. 29 home game against Southeastern Oklahoma State starts at 5:30 p.m. It will be Senior Day for OBU.
