WICHITA, Kan. -- The Oklahoma Baptist Bison secured an impressive 87-70 victory over the Newman Jets on Friday at Fugate Gymnasium. The win elevated OBU to 3-1 on the season, while Newman fell to 4-2.
The Bison were powered by an excellent shooting display from
Ethan Scott, who came off the bench to tally 21, shooting 6-for-10 from beyond the arc.
Ricky Brown and
JC Curry each contributed 14 points, with Curry excelling at the free-throw line. Curry converted all nine of his attempts.
Terry Coner Jr. facilitated the offense with a team-high six assists while also chipping in 12 points.
Oklahoma Baptist's balanced attack saw contributions from multiple players, as seven players scored at least six points.
The visitors established their dominance early, taking a 42-33 lead at halftime. That was keyed by an 11-0 run after the game was tied at 17 at the 9:33 mark. Their defensive intensity and rebounding gave them the edge as well, as they outpaced Newman with 40 rebounds to the Jets' 32.
For Newman, Aaron Murphy led the scoring effort with 18 points on an efficient 7-for-10 shooting, while Jordan Glenn-Hawkins added 16 points, including three 3-pointers. However, the Jets struggled to find consistent scoring from their starting lineup, with no other player managing double figures. The team shot 40.4% from the field, falling short of Oklahoma Baptist's 44.4%.
The Bison's bench depth played a pivotal role, outscoring Newman's reserves 38-33. Plus, OBU's solid three-point shooting (12-for-30) and near-perfect free-throw performance (19-for-21) proved too much for the Jets, who were limited to 34.6% from three-point range.
This decisive win showcased Oklahoma Baptist's potential to dominate through teamwork, defensive tenacity, and efficient shooting.
Next on the schedule for the Bison is a road date against Dallas Baptist on Nov. 29 at 5 p.m.
