ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – Henderson State hit a season-high 13 three-pointers during a 74-54 win over Oklahoma Baptist on Saturday during Great American Conference play at the Duke Wells Center.
The Reddies moved their record to 7-5 and 3-3 in the GAC while the Bison dropped their second consecutive contest and dipped to 5-7 and 2-4 in league play.
Sophomore
Jaedyn Getman provided a team-high 21 points on 8-of-13 shooting while fifth-year senior
Madison Chambers scored 12. Also of note,
Parker Stevenson registered nine points and became the first Bison freshman in the D2 era to notch five steals in a game. Plus,
Jill Leslie grabbed a game-high eight boards with two blocks.
As a team, turnovers were a problem for the green and gold. They had 17 while making just two more field goals (19).
HSU scored eight of the game's first 10 points within two minutes of action. Natalie Cardenas hit a pair of long balls in that span. The Bison did pull the first period to five points, 11-6, after a Getman jumper in the paint, however, Henderson closed with another deep shot to boost its advantage to 14-8.
In the second, the hosts scored 23 and held the Bison to 12. That helped Henderson State pull away. Early on, freshman
Payten Conde's layup got OBU to within four, 14-10, but the Reddies followed with eight straight. That included a pair of deep shots from Tori Gittens and Ashley Farrar. Over the remainder of the second, the Bison broke that double-digit deficit once, 24-16, when Stevenson drained a three at the 5:10 mark.
By half, the Reddies led 37-20.
The hosts then closed any door of a Bison comeback with a strong start to the third. They hit a 13-5 stretch and after another three from Brynlee Huggins at 5:43, HSU doubled up its advantage, 50-25.
By game's end, Henderson saw eight players hit three-pointers.
Next week, OBU will host Arkansas Tech on Jan. 11 at 5:30 p.m. Tinker Federal Credit Union is the game-day sponsor and will provide the first 50 OBU fans with a $10 voucher to spend at concessions.
