Bison’s Comeback Falls Short at Southwestern

WEATHERFORD – Despite a dismal first quarter, Oklahoma Baptist still nearly forced overtime against Southwestern Oklahoma State on Saturday at Pioneer Cellular Event Center. The Bison ended up falling 63-61 to the Lady Bulldogs and moved their record to 8-10 and 5-7 in the Great American Conference.

Key Leaders
  • Jaedyn Getman, for the 14th time, led OBU in scoring. She posted a game-high 26 points and added seven boards, another game-high. It was her ninth 20-point game of the year.
  • Kennedy Large added nine points and seven rebounds.
  • Madison Chambers registered eight points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals.
  • Freshman Parker Stevenson also contributed eight points for OBU.
What Went Right
  • The Bison, over the second, third and fourth quarters, outscored the hosts 52-38.
  • Getman responded. After shooting 5-of-18 versus Southern Nazarene, OBU's sophomore standout provided a 10-of-15 effort in 34 minutes of action.
  • Rebounding. OBU posted a 39-31 advantage over SWOSU. Eight of those were offensive and it helped the green and gold hold a 12-2 lead in second-chance points.
  • Three-point defense. The Bison watched as the Lady Bulldogs fired 37 shots from deep, their third-highest total this season. By the end of the game, SWOSU made 10 for 27 percent.
  • They never gave up. After 10 minutes of action, the Bison were down 25-9. Most teams would have folded, however, OBU plugged away and gave itself a chance at the end.
What Went Wrong
  • First-quarter offensive woes. Two days ago, OBU didn't score against SNU for more than five minutes of the first. Fast forward to Saturday: OBU didn't find a point until two Jill Leslie free throws at the 3:11 mark. At that point it was 15-2 SWOSU. Before those freebies, the Bison turned over the ball six times and missed all seven shots.
  • Backing up its defense. OBU's second quarter brought a solid defensive effort, holding SWOSU to 25-percent shooting. However, its offense was unable to break into the double-digit deficit and that allowed the Lady Bulldogs to lead 35-19 at the break.
  • Fast-break points. Southwestern held an 11-0 advantage in that category.
  • Clutch free throw shooting. Trailing 62-60 with 18 ticks left, the Bison got an offensive rebound and were fouled. However, only one of the next two foul shots were made and the hosts stayed in front.
On The Horizon
  • The Bison, who are holding on to the eighth-place spot in the GAC standings, return home on Feb. 1 to face Henderson State. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
