Crimson Storm Spoils OBU’s GAC Opener

SHAWNEE – Southern Nazarene got a goal in each half and saw goalie Gianna Bonnett stop 10 Oklahoma Baptist shots on Wednesday during a 2-0 win. The Storm's victory snapped the Bison's 13-match unbeaten streak (12-0-1) in the series dating back Oct. 20, 2015.

Key Leaders
  • MF Kaylee Swaner: Tied for the team-lead with three shots on goal.
  • F Alanna Bloomingdale: Also attempted three shots on goal.
  • F Sophia Ziesemer: In 40 minutes of action, notched a pair of shots on target.
  • GK Mia Pendleton: Stopped four Southern Nazarene shots.
  • As a unit, and for the first time all season, the Bison out-shot their opponent, 18-8.
What Went Right
  • The green and gold had most of the possession on this night, as showcased by their shots advantage. They also held a 6-0 corner-kick lead.
  • Through the first 22 minutes of action, OBU had good scoring opportunities. Lex Williamson's shot in the 12th minute just missed outside the upper-right crossbar while Swaner nearly found twine seven minutes later.
  • OBU's passing was arguably at its best through seven matches this year. There were plenty of through balls and drives around the end line forcing SNU into tight situations.
What Went Wrong
  • Forward Bella Morgas got by a few defenders for the game's first goal.  In the 26th minute, she navigated near the middle of the 18 and found open net in the left lower corner. That was her nation-leading ninth goal of 2023.
  • A missed penalty kick. Just 13 seconds after Morgas' goal, Swaner was fouled in the goalie's box but was denied on the PK attempt. The rebound to Bloomingdale was also stopped by Bonnett in what turned out to be the defensive plays of the night.
  • SNU's 1-0 lead doubled in the 64th minute when Morgas broke down the OBU defense, passed from near the right post, and watched as Segen Henley finished with a left-footed boot.
  • The Bison, after getting a half-dozen shots on goal in the first half, were held to four in the second.
On The Horizon
  • OBU will look to get into the win column when it visits Southwestern Oklahoma State on Sept. 23. The Bulldogs tied Northwestern on Wednesday and moved their record to 0-5-2.
