White, OBU Down Bulldogs

WEATHERFORD – Freshman Hali White's first career goal in the 10th minute propelled Oklahoma Baptist (2-6, 1-1 GAC) to a 1-0 win at Southwestern Oklahoma State on Saturday in Great American Conference play.

Key Leaders
  • MF White: Scored off a pass from Kaylee Swaner. The newcomer shot to the upper-left corner for the match's only goal.
  • MF Swaner: Her assist moved her career point total to 35. She is now tied with Kerregan Edwards (2015-18) for fifth place all-time in OBU history.
  • F Avril Baccam: All five of her shots, a team-high in this match, were on-goal.
  • The Bison's offense was very fluid. It attempted 10 shots on-goal, a season-high.
  • Defensively, OBU's back line allowed just one shot on-target to the host Bulldogs.
  • Furthermore, senior Mia Pendleton hustled on numerous live balls in the box to thwart any hope of the Bulldogs scoring.
What Went Right
  • A win in Weatherford. After being swept by Southwestern last year (0-3), including a defeat in the GAC Tournament Final, the green and gold got revenge against their rival.
  • For the second straight contest, the Bison attained double-digit shot attempts. Over that span, OBU has out-shot Southern Nazarene and SWOSU 34-15.
  • Swaner was the key to the Bison's goal. She was able to beat a SWOSU defender, drive into the 18 and passed to a wide-open White who finished.
  • The Bison played with the lead. And for a long time. For nearly 80 minutes, OBU stayed in front and learned from a defeat at Midwestern State on Sept. 13 when it gave up two, second-half goals.
What Went Wrong
  • A turnover deep in defensive territory nearly led to the equalizer. With less than 10 minutes left, SWOSU intercepted a clearance by freshman Brae Baker. A few moments later, Natalie Freeman's flick from about eight yards hit the left post.
  • Finishing on offense has been an early-season storyline and today was no different. OBU had chances for more than one goal but couldn't find nylon.
On The Horizon
  • The Bison will look to build on this road victory with another trip on Sept. 27. They'll visit East Central (0-6-1, 0-0-1 GAC) in Ada.
