SHAWNEE – Oklahoma Baptist University Department of Athletics raised a record amount over Bison Backers Week from March 23-28.
"I thought we had tremendous support from our alumni and fan base for our first Bison Backers Week," Director of Athletics Robert Davenport said.
"This is the first time we focused our energies specifically on raising funds for student-athlete scholarships. The finale of the week, the Green and Gold Gala featuring Tim Tebow, really tied a bow on the efforts of our staff and student-athletes."
Among the staff that helped was Associate Athletic Director Nick Weisenborn who helped procure a bunch of the online auction items.
"Bison Backers Week provided a great opportunity for our fundraising staff to engage with different donor bases over the week," Weisenborn stated.
"This week was a pivotal event for OBU Athletics in helping to raise a record amount of funds for student-athlete scholarships, as well as uniting our donor bases across the OBU campus and beyond."
The five-day student-athlete scholarship fundraiser had great turnout and giving through numerous avenues. An online auction that featured 46 items, which included dinner with OBU President Heath Thomas and First Lady, brought bids on 42 of those items.
There was also the Bison Backers Golf Classic at nearby FireLake Golf Course. There were 20 teams that participated during the March 25 scramble. Plus, a Call-A-Thon featuring Bison women student-athletes brought giving from OBU alums.
To cap off the week, the Green & Gold Gala, that featured college football legend Tim Tebow, brought more than 800 people to the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City. Contributions to student-athlete scholarships were made there as well.
