WICHITA, Kan. – Behind
Nolan Feazle's career day on the mound, Oklahoma Baptist defeated Newman 12-6 on Wednesday. OBU improved its record to 24-17 with the result.
The junior tossed six frames, limited the Jets to two earned runs and struck out nine. Feazle's strikeout total was a career-high, besting his previous high of seven Feb. 18 at Arkansas Tech.
OBU led throughout and it scored in five of the first six innings.
Dan Pruitt notched his team-high 17th homer in the third to boost the team's lead to 3-0. Following single runs in the fourth and fifth frames, the Bison came back with two more in the sixth.
During that inning,
Jayden Shafer connected with a single that scored
Jose Parga. OBU's seventh run then came courtesy of Pruitt's sacrifice fly to center. That sequence brought home
Austin Gonzales.
The host Jets did make things a little uncomfortable as they scored five runs between the sixth and eighth frames. There was a two-run homer from Zack Stewart and a couple RBI singles. However, relief pitchers
Roy Peguero,
Michael Altman and
Diego Chavez would keep Newman from making a comeback.
By game's end, Chavez earned his first save with a pair of strikeouts in 1.1 innings pitched.
Leading the Bison's offensive charge were Parga and Shafer who each tallied three hits with a combined five RBI.
Next on the schedule is a big, three-game Great American Conference series with Henderson State. Game one comes April 21 at 6 p.m. in Shawnee.
