Harding Bottles Up Bison

SHAWNEE – Harding contained a few of the key Oklahoma Baptist players on Saturday during a 2-0 Great American Conference victory at the OBU Soccer Complex. The win by HU snapped OBU's 12-match winning streak in the series in the process.

With the defeat, Oklahoma Baptist moved its record to 3-7-1 and 2-2-1 in the GAC.

Key Leaders
  • Kaylee Swaner attempted team-highs with three shots, two of which were on target.
  • Both Sophia Ziesemer and Alanna Bloomingdale added two more shots for OBU.
  • Brae Baker and Asley Baker stood out defensively, thwarting multiple HU runs in the 18.
  • Harding's defense deserved credit in this match. It targeted OBU's Swaner and Avril Baccam, two of OBU's leading shot-takers, and double-teamed them often.
  • HU goalie Michaela Potter denied four shots for the visitors.
What Went Right
  • While the Bison's offense wasn't as good as Thursday's match versus Ouachita, OBU did get some good looks from Bloomingdale, Swaner and Ziesemer in the first half.
  • The green and gold's back line of the Bakers, Michaela White and Anna Branham matched the pace of HU's attackers. That group saw numerous affronts at the Bison net and didn't give up anything.
What Went Wrong
  • While the Bison defense hung with the pace of HU, their issue was defending set pieces.
  • In the 28th minute, a corner kick was sent in by Regan Thompson, flicked by Lauren Service and Georgia Templeton headed it to the right side.
  • Then, in the 74th minute, a near-similar play happened. Following another corner, Caitlann Potter's header was saved by Mia Pendleton and the rebound was put back in by Whitney Thomas near the left post.
  • By match's end, Harding had a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.
  • In the second half, scoring opportunities were rare, as OBU found four attempts. Only Swaner's in the 82nd minute was on target.
On The Horizon
  • The Bison will get another crack at GAC leader Southern Nazarene. OBU, who lost to SNU 2-0 on Sept. 20, will make a quick drive to Bethany on Oct. 11 at 7 p.m.
