Ziesemer, Bison Handle Ouachita, 2-0

SHAWNEE – Oklahoma Baptist earned its biggest win of the season, defeating previously unbeaten Ouachita on Thursday by a 2-0 count at the OBU Soccer Complex. The Bison improved to 3-6-1 overall and 2-1-1 in Great American Conference play. As for the Tigers, they dipped to 5-1-4 and 2-1-1 in the GAC.

Key Leaders
  • The entire Bison team came ready to play on Thursday. They dominated on offense for most of the match and never really allowed the Tigers to get into any kind of rhythm.
  • Sophia Ziesemer scored her first career goal while transfer Avril Baccam tallied her first goal in a Bison uniform.
  • Hali White provided an assist as did Kaylee Swaner, her GAC-leading fourth helper.
  • Defenders Asley Baker, Brae Baker, Anna Branham and Michaela White led a charge that stymied the Tigers in the first half with just one shot.
  • Senior goalie Mia Pendleton made six saves in the second half, virtually all off Ouachita free kicks, to preserve the team's second shutout of the season.
What Went Right
  • OBU out-shot Ouachita 16-11. Eight of those shots were on-goal.
  • The disparity in shots came due to OBU's relentlessness and solid passing of the ball.
  • Ziesemer's goal was a thing of beauty. In the 24th minute, the freshman received a cross from her classmate, White, and headed it home to the right side.
  • Defensively, the Bison were on point throughout the first 45 minutes and didn't give up anything to the visitors.
  • The team's second goal brought Swaner feeding Baccam in the 50th minute along the left side.
  • On four or five of Pendleton's saves, the senior snagged the ball out of the air right near the goal mouth, thwarting any chance of the Tigers getting a head or foot on the ball.
What Went Wrong
  • In a match that featured 31 combined foul calls, OBU was called for five between the 63rd and 80th minutes. What resulted was on-goal attempts by the Tigers putting pressure on Pendleton.
On the Horizon
  • The Bison will return to the pitch on Oct. 7 at 1 p.m. against Harding in Shawnee.
