SHAWNEE – Oklahoma Baptist was efficient at the foul line and plenty good in the second half as it led from start to finish in a 67-58 victory against Arkansas-Monticello on Saturday at the Noble Complex.
The Bison won their second consecutive game and improved to 13-6 and 9-4 in the GAC.
Freshman
Jaedyn Getman led all scorers with 22 points while hitting 8-of-10 at the foul line. Fellow teammates
Madison Chambers and
Kennedy Large also scored in double figures with 17 and 11, respectively. For Large, she tied the team high with six rebounds while Chambers contributed six assists.
After a 55.9 percent shooting clip in the first and 16-11 lead, the Bison slowed down a little in the second but turned to their solid free-throw shooting ability to stay in front.
In the second, OBU made nine of its 11 freebies with Getman scoring four of those. The green and gold extended their lead to as many as ten, 22-12, on a free throw by Getman at 6:43. However, UAM was able to stick around and got to within five points a few times. The last of those on two freebies by Aeryn Hawkins with 59 seconds left made the score 31-26.
Second-half action saw the hosts get in gear on offense. OBU hit 61.9 percent in the final two quarters including an 8-for-9 spot in the third. The hot third period brought five different scorers and a lead as big as 17 points. That advantage, 53-37, was delivered by
Melissa Southard with about 40 seconds left.
As for the Blossoms, they turned it over five times in the period and shot six of 13 (46.1%) and did not keep pace with OBU.
In the fourth, UAM never threatened OBU's lead and only got to within seven points.
OBU will return to the road for its next game. That comes Feb. 2 at Ouachita with tip-off scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
