SHAWNEE – Oklahoma Baptist libero
Maci Langford broke the previous single-game dig record in a three-set match during the Bison's sweep over Henderson State on Thursday at the Noble Complex.
Langford recorded 37 digs, besting the previous total of 33 set by Sierra VeraCruz on Dec. 1, 2016 against Cincinnati Christian. OBU's junior also etched her name in the GAC record book with the performance. Among NCAA Division II, Langford's big night was the most digs in a three-setter since Carson-Newman's (TN) Morgan Ballard recorded 40 against Queens (NC) on Nov. 23, 2019.
Plus, the team's dig total of 94 also set a new single-game program mark which had been accomplished twice before in the 2011 and 2012 seasons when 92 digs were rang up.
D'Erricka Frierson posted a double-double with 16 kills and 10 digs while
Jill Leslie added 10 kills. Furthermore,
Abrey Galt handed out 29 assists while
Avery Hellmuth contributed nine kills and four aces.
OBU cruised in the first, winning 25-12. Leading 4-3, the hosts scored seven of the next eight which included four straight kills from Frierson, Hellmuth and
Audrey Poupard. Later, Frierson ballooned the lead to twelve, 20-8, with another kill. In the first set alone, Frierson notched eight kills.
In the second, the green and gold were having no difficulties until the end when Henderson nearly came back from a 10-point deficit. Leading 22-12 after a Frierson kill, the Reddies scored eight straight to make it 22-20 after a point by Larkin Luke. Despite the uneasiness, OBU scored the final three points including an ace by Hellmuth.
A hot start to the third helped the Bison win 25-20. That early stretch brought five straight points including a
Rylee Martin ace and Leslie kill. Later,
Taneyah Brown's kill along the right side made it 9-2. Henderson did once again manage to fight back, bringing the tally to 20-18. But it didn't matter, as the green and gold closed things out down the stretch with a couple kills from
Jenna West and Leslie.
Next on the schedule for OBU is a home date tomorrow against Ouachita at 4 p.m.
